Labels.

We are getting a light snowfall but it looks as though it may continue for a while.  A friend told me 'big flakes, small accumulation; small flakes, large accumulation.  Now I will be watching to see if it is true.

I am enjoying my new 4 patch method and got 30 blocks done.  That is almost enough for a top when alternated with plain strips.  I think I will make it into a lap quilt to give to our thoughtful neighbours.  I make so many quilts with the end goal of selling that is it nice to have an actual purpose for one.

My wee Heidi dog seems to be feeling her age lately.  She has started laying beside my chair when I am in the studio.  I put a nice soft blanket on the floor for her and she is curled up on it now.  I can reach down to pet her occasionally which makes us both happy.

I have a question.  When you label a quilt, do you add the date it was completed or the date it went to its new home?  I tend to do the latter as I can have one sitting around for quite a while until it is sold or given away.  I do include the completion date in my records.

Scrappy four Patch.

As I sit here writing this, our neighbour from across the road is filling the mudroom with wood.  Hubby had a small setback with the healing of his carpal tunnel incision and has to wait a few more days before using his hand.  He was in to the doctor's today to have the stitches removed but was told that he had a reaction to thread.  She removed what was there and put in a different type.  Hopefully, this will result in complete healing.  We are so fortunate with our neighbours as we have many who will come if needed.  We were equally fortunate in Edmonton with the people who lived on either side of us plus many others.  It is so encouraging, as we get older, to know that we won't have to worry about giving up our home because we can't do things.

We are experiencing some covid closures in our area again.  The library has shut its doors until after Jan. 1 and there is discussions going on as to whether children will be going back to school.

I have come up with an idea for making scrappy 4 patch blocks.  I take two charm squares, place right sides together and hem on opposing sides.  Cut down the middle between the two sewn edges. (2.5 from sewn edge).  Press seams.

                                                                                Fig 1

Place pieced sections right sides together (fig 1) and sew a seam on short sides. (fig. 2)

                                                                            Fig. 2

Measure 2.5 inches from one stitched edge and cut (note black dot on Fig. 2)so you have 2 sections. (Fig. 3)

                                                                            Fig. 3.

Press.  You can speed up the process by chain stitching.  Sew along one side of all the paired charm squares and then do the same on the opposing side.  Cut and proceed to next step until completed.

When finished, you will have 2 blocks the same which can be either included in one top or used in two different ones.

I think you will find this method much faster than sewing four 2.5 in. squares together to make a block.

Let me know what you think.

New Year Plans?

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.  Hubby and I had a quiet day.  It was just the two of us so other than eating and opening gifts, we spent the day reading.  The next day, it was a bit more exciting as hubby's youngest sister came for a visit and brought her two young grandchildren.  The young lad is very quiet but the girl is rambunctious and loud.  I wasn't sure how our aging Heidi would manage but the kids were great with her.  Hubby took them to our neighbours so they could see the goats, they tobogganed down our driveway which has a great hill and then we all watched a movie.  Everyone left after breakfast the next morning.  It was a lovely visit and it was good getting to know the children again as it has been a couple of years (thank you pandemic) since we last saw them.

Today we went to Huntsville where I picked up the new smart watch I had ordered.  I have been trying to learn all the functions and how to use them  since then.  I am not sure all the work involved is worth it.  I like to know the number of steps I have taken in a day and some of the other information but the time it takes setting it all up is rather off putting.

Tomorrow, I have to make some more neck scarves for our scout troupe and then would like to start making some reusable shopping bags for our craft store. What are your plans for the New Year?

A Blessing of Turkey Soup.

I can't believe how long it has been since I last posted. I have had so much going on including hubby having carpal tunnel surgery, that any free moment was spent resting. Hubby's appointment was for 2.30 so I took him to the hospital and then went shopping.  I didn't have a lot to do and, an hour later, I was sitting in a parking lot reading a book.  When hubby called, I was ready to pick him up only to be told that he hadn't gone in yet. He was finally ready to go at 4.30 which made it after 5 before we got home.  I was so tired, I left the groceries in the car as there wasn't anything that would be hurt.  We had been at a Christmas dinner earlier in the day and the cook gave us a large container of turkey soup.  It was a life saver as it only had to be heated.

I fell into bed shortly after nine. I have had to take on hubby's chores for a few days but he is healed enough to do them himself now.

On Friday, I finally ordered gifts to be sent to the grandchildren and marked that off the list.  Saturday, I realized I hadn't changed the shipping location and everything is coming to me rather than Alberta.  They will be great birthday gifts.  I have now sent gift cards.

As I mentioned in my last post, we haven't been able to do cards etc. because of Post Office problems.  When the Federal government gave its employees until the end of November to be vaccinated or lose their jobs, it didn't plan for the fall out.  Postal Employees are Federal and, apparently a couple of those at our office lost their jobs.  That left only two people.  One to do the sorting and the other for the desk and everything else.  One of those women is a friend and she has been working 12 hour days.  The Post Office is only open for a few hours through the week which means long line-ups.  I don't know if larger communities are having the same problem, but I imagine they are.

I started a new pattern on Monday at quilt group, decided I didn't like it so have changed it to something else.  It has been a few weeks since I have been able to work on my frame.  Hopefully, after Christmas life will slow down.  How are you doing?  All ready for the big day?

Hopeful Pile Getting Higher

Here we are at Friday already.  When we were on Monday, I had a list of things I wanted to accomplish before the week ended.  I have done some of them but most are still in the 'hopeful' pile.  I have sent one Christmas card but as our post office is closed getting parcels and cards to the recipients is going to be a challenge.   I expect things will get sorted out eventually but it is just one more challenge to deal with this year.  Supply shortages is another.  Hubby is going to the city to do some shopping this morning and I am hoping he will be able to find me some gluten free flour.

We have quite a bit of snow right now but it is going to be plus 7 shortly so everything will disappear again.  I did get to try my new snow thrower and it does an excellent job of clearing the deck.  It will also be great for doing a doggy trail so Heidi can get out for her business.  I don't mind shoveling snow.  It is good exercise.  However, lifting it over the banks as they get higher and higher is a problem.

I finished decorating our tree.  I really thought I would have a lot of ornaments left over as the tree is a third shorter than usual.  I was actually able to use all of them and could have done with a few more.  I guess it is because I can reach around the back whereas the other didn't have much there.

I hope the current Covid situation isn't going to affect your celebration this year and that you and your loved ones are all healthy.

First Winter Storm

We are getting our first real winter storm although it isn't too storm like.  The snow changed to rain in the afternoon which is supposed to become freezing rain late on.  Our quilt group cancelled their meeting just in case the situation got bad once everyone was in the village.  We only have one member who lives in Burk's Falls so we have to be mindful of members who (like me) are travelling.
I used the time at home to make my Christmas cakes, start decorating the tree and house and get working on the scout neck scarves I have to have done by the weekend.  We are just getting our cards sent out and discovered that our post office has drastically cut back on its hours because of staff shortage.  One person, apparently, isn't double vaxed and another quit.  It is always something, isn't it.

This is one of the quilts I will have on sale.  It is 50 X 60", crib quilt size.  It can be washed and dried by machine.  It is priced at $40.00 (plus postage, Canadian funds) and it will be loved your special little one.  A label can be added at no extra charge.  If you are interested, I can share photos of the back as well as the quilting design.

One Slice Pattern.

Karen asked if I might be allergic to the sizing in fabric.  I think I can safely rule that one out as I have been quilting/dressmaking for the majority of my life without problem.  Also, I prewash all my fabric which would eliminate or lesson the sizing.  Thank you for your input, though, Karen.

I took my quilts and facemask, today,  to the local store which carries my products.  This has brought me up to date with my sewing so I can have the weekend off.  The weather bureau is predicting a snow storm for Sunday p.m. so quilt group may be cancelled for Monday which would be a pity.

I found a really easy and quick pattern on the Patchwork Posse post.  It is made with a packet of layer cakes or an equal number (40) of 10 inch fabrics.  I have a Batik package that I was saving for something suitable and I think this would be a perfect.  The pattern pieces are large enough that you can still see the design in the fabric.  The link is below.  Scroll down until you see the patterns listed.  It is the second on and it is called One Slice.

Pre Christmas Sale Coming

What a week.  It has been so busy that I hardly recognize what standing still means.  The Christmas sale on Saturday went well with me selling two quilts and some face mask.  Monday, in addition to the regular gathering of the Burk's Falls Village Quilter's, I had another doctor's appointment. My arms and hands were still itching.  The prescription cream would help during the day but not at night.  Even applying it morning and evening didn't make a difference.  I have another cream now and, so far, the itch is lessening.

Tuesday, hubby and I went shopping.  A lot of the products I usually buy weren't available due to shortages.  One of those items was my gluten free bread.  Fortunately, I was able to get everything else at our local store except the bread.  I had to buy more bananas despite getting quite a few the day before.  We were so beat when we got home, that we missed the bag containing the bananas when we brought everything indoors.  By the time we remembered, they were frozen.  They are now in the freezer waiting to be used in baking.

I had a meeting and other things to do yesterday but today I was finally able to get at the sewing machine.  I quilted a wall hanging and made more masks.  I still have 13 neck scarves to make for our local scouts.  I am trying not to think about Christmas although I do have the turkey and all the supplies for baking.

This is one of the quilts I sold on Saturday.  I would like to get more of these panels as they sell quickly.

I am planning on having a pre Christmas sale shortly.  Items will be greatly reduced and posted on my web site.  If you know of someone who is looking for a quilted gift, please let them know.

Warning

Warning: winter praising imminent.  Those of you who are long time supporters know I love winter.  I expect the time will come as I age that I won't find the cold and snow so exciting but I am not there yet.  We had a snow fall early on the weekend and it has stayed.  There isn't a lot yet and the ground certainly isn't covered but there is plenty of evidence that my favourite season is arrive.

I just got back from my daily dog walk and it was cool enough to wear a winter coat but I didn't need a hat or gloves.  No socks either but that isn't unusual.  The sun was shining and a breeze, strong enough to notice but not to cause discomfort, made my exposed skin feel alive.  I didn't need to put booties on Heidi yet either which saved a lot of preparation time.  However, I need to get them ready as her little tootsies do need covering.

I haven't got a lot of quilting done today.  The lap quilt is loaded onto the machine and ready to go-as soon as I figure out why the thread keeps breaking.  Probably need to change the needle and make sure the foot is the proper distance from the quilt top.  In the meantime, I am working on a baby quilt.

I was at the doctor's yesterday and he diagnosed my itch as being eczema and gave me a prescription for a cream.  It didn't start helping until today but, while I still have the spots, the itchiness is a lot less.

A member of my family who lives in another country is experiencing a head shaking situation.  Her house is being upgraded to meet current environmental standards-new windows, doors, extra insulation etc.  After the workers left, she discovered she cannot open her doors to get out. The locks seem to be stuck.   The company was called and they said they would get it fixed within TWENTY FOUR HOURS.  Meantime she is stuck in a house hoping there isn't an emergency and trying to keep her daughter calm who is finding the situation very upsetting.  I cannot believe that the renovation company does not consider this to be an emergency situation.  The lady has a young son who was not at home and now can't get home.  He is at his grandmother's house.  Somebody should lose their job over this.

Christmas Trees and Chili

Another sign that winter is either here or on its way; I have a pot of chili cooking on the stove.  I used kidney beans this time although I usually substitute carrots.  Hubby prefers the beans.  I always make a large amount so I can freeze some.  I will do the same amount of stew later.  No fear of starving in this house.

We were supposed to have a nasty snow storm last night leaving 6 to 7 inches behind.  However, we got little more than a skiff.  If looks nice but I am waiting for a real downfall.  Our new tree was delivered this morning.  We haven't taken it out of the box yet as we have both been busy but probably will tonight. Hubby has been fill up the mud room with wood and getting the plough on the tractor ready to go through the drifts. I was doing what my sister calls 'invisible work', the stuff that has to be done but no one can see the difference.

I was looking for something in the freezer yesterday and, this morning when I was getting something else, I noticed I had left out the ice cream!  So frustrating when that happens.

I delivered some face masks to a store yesterday and today I am finishing the top of a lap quilt.  If I don't get it done, I may have to answer to hubby who is getting tired of hearing me say I need to finish it!

(Karen and other with space challenges when putting up the Christmas tree:  have you seen the upside down ones.  My SIL has one and it really is a great idea when you have a lot young ones and gifts.)

The Itch is Going Away

We have been getting heavy rain today and I was concerned about the temperatures dipping to fast and turning every surface into a skating rink.  However, it stayed above freezing all day so we were fine.  It has dropped now but it isn't affecting us.

I have been busy making face masks to sell and now they are done, I can go back to my quilts.  I hope to get a crib and lap quilt done before the 26 as I have a sale on the Saturday.  Once that is done, I can concentrate on our celebration.  I have ordered a new artificial tree for this year although the one we have is in good shape.  I want a shorter one that can be placed on the wooden file cabinet we have in front of the living room window.  We have been moving the cabinet every year and as it is old and getting a bit creaky I am getting a bit concerned about it eventually coming apart.  The other problem is finding somewhere to put it.  Small homes are great for cleaning but storage indoors is always a concern.

I am pleased to say that whatever I am allergic to seems to be settling down.  The itch has been considerable less today.  It hasn't disappeared but it is less.  Such a relief.

My thoughts and prayers are with those in British Columbia who have experienced mud slides and floods.  I hope you, your family, pets and livestock are all safe.  If you live in the area and can help, I know you will,

Blessings

It's Coming

Maybe you have been trying to avoid the passing days that are leading up to December but you know that the big day is not far away.  Christmas has been floating around in the back of my brain but I still have to get quilts and other items ready for a craft sale so I have been putting off any serious thinking.

I found a link that has some great ideas for handmade gifts.  Perhaps making a couple of these will help get you on track.  If you have been a quilter for any length of time, you will know that Patchwork Posse always has great patterns.

101+ Handmade Holiday Decorations to Make (patchworkposse.com)

It looks as though I am going to be able to get my new electric snow shovel out soon.  We have been getting snow off and on all day and it is staying on the ground.  I just finished the last of my jam making today so that is another job I can mark off the list.  I made sugar free bumbleberry jam using a sweetener substitute.  It set really well  which is always a good sign.

If you make any of these items, send me a photo to share,

Flowers of Love

Reader Karen was sharing how she misses her family and how they have all been affected by the pandemic.  I try to maintain a positive attitude but in unguarded moments, I wonder if we will ever be free of this virus.  Will it, like a cold, be something we accept as part of living?  I hope not as the seriousness of this disease has far to many ramifications.

Isn't it lovely to be appreciated.  Hubby came home from the village today with a lovely bouquet of carnations.  He said they were in appreciation of all the extra work I have been doing lately. I have been extra busy and don't seem to be catching up on all that needs to be done.  Every time I think I will be able to have a day of sewing, something comes up that derails the schedule.  It is frustrating but I know a lot of people are in the same position. And I got carnations!

Next week, I have fewer appointments so should make some headway-I hope.

Our weather is getting cooler and we may have snow soon.  Hard to believe we are almost in December without any of the fluffy stuff,

Itching is Irritating.

I finished my charity quilt and gave it to its new owner.  He was really pleased and I hope it helps keep him warm this winter.

Yesterday, hubby and I took a trip to Orillia to see one of my sisters who is here from England to see family.  Hubby took the opportunity to visit with his mother while sis and I had lunch and caught up with all the family happenings. The weather was really nice so we took a stroll along the main street afterwards. I would have liked to spend more time wandering around but we had a little doggy at home and I wanted to do some grocery shopping as well.

It is always so hard when I get to spend time with my family and then they go back home.  I know that many people have family members who are in other countries or even on the far side of this one and I sure you experience the same feelings.  I try to remember that I am fortunate to even have a little time with them. Looking on the positive side helps but not completely.

Early last week, I had a reaction to some medication I am taking.  Once I figured out what was causing the itch and, now, hives, I realized it had been going on for a while and gradually getting worse.  I talked to my doctor today about quitting the medication and he agreed that that was the best solution.  The original problem still has to be dealt with but I can live with it for a bit.  In the meantime, I am trying not to scratch while I wait for my system to get back to normal.

Apple Day

Today is apple day. I bought a bushel of apples from an orchard recently and, as I was up earlier than usual (more about that in a minute, decided that today was good day to get them done.  I cored and sectioned nearly all of them, filled medium sized freezer bags , put aside 4 that had the cores removed and turned the rest into applesauce.  Hubby will be able to have lots of apple crisp this winter and we will have baked apples for supper.  Tomorrow, I am planning on making my jam and then another season of preserving etc.  will be finished-except for the pumpkins.

We had to get up early this morning because a service person was coming to fix our well.  I think I mentioned that we were getting a lot of air in our water lines which caused the water to spurt and hiss accompanied by a symphony of bangs.  The company said they would send someone around Friday afternoon and then called to change it to the morning.  I didn't care when as we weren't going anywhere.  When she mentioned they would be here by 8, I wasn't concerned about that either as hubby is usually up early.  I'm not.  I like to sleep until at least 8.30.  However, this morning I work up around 7.45 and got up.  You can certainly get a lot of stuff done in a day when your day starts in the middle of the night😁

There was a time when 7.30 was the middle of the day.  When I drove transit bus, I was out of bed before 4.30 and at work an hour later.  Oh how I hated anyone who phoned after 9 p.m..  One person in particular never seemed to understand that I had to get up early.  Didn't understand until I called her at 4.30 to chat about nothing.  Problem solved.

We have a nice sunny day again but cooler and grayer days are coming.

An Eventful Day

Well, I had a busy morning today.  I don't always get up very early and this morning I was still in bed at 8.30 when our portable alarm went off.  I heard a vehicle but thought it was going along the road so assured Heidi we were all safe.  Then I heard a  door slam and got up in time to see a delivery truck going back down the driveway.  My new snowthrower had arrived.  Before we had time to start breakfast, the hydro went out and our neighbour called to see if we had been affected and said she would let us know when she had info.  I get notices on my cell phone letting me know when hydro is expected to be back on but as we get very poor reception, it isn't much good.  Shelley is kind enough to give us the updates.

Back to getting breakfast and the phone rings again.  It is my son who always calls on Tuesdays but usually later in the morning.  We chat for a bit doing catching up on anything that has happened since the previous call and then back to breakfast only to have company.  Husband's cousin was dropping off her sewing machine for me to fix.  We visited for a bit and then, finally, we had breakfast.

After that I started doing the seasonal clothes switch, hydro came back on for lunch so I was able to do the other things I had planned.

We had a hawk get at the chickens and killed our rooster.  We were both upset and this was best one we have had.  He was really good at protecting the hens, wasn't aggressive but kept everyone in line.  It is very difficult trying to find a balance between letting the chickens have free range and protecting them for predators.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a normal day.  I still haven't opened the box containing the snow thrower.  That can wait until tomorrow.

Quilt Group Day

I really appreciate the comments I get on the blog.  It helps me feel even more connected to you and your encouragement means so much.

Today was our local quilt group meeting.  Another member that we haven't seen for a bit was out and contributed her dry sense of humour.  Another of the ladies had brought a number of quilts and tops that she had finished since covid and so we had a mini show and tell.  I loved hearing all the positive comments and encouragement.  This is what I have missed the most when we were not able to meet.  I can (and do) quilt at home but I don't hear the caring we have for each other or the respect and teasing unless I go to the meeting.  Being surrounded by my quilting friends is like cuddling under a favourite quilt on a cool evening.

Speaking of cool, our temperatures dropped quite a bit on the weekend and I wore a warmer coat when I was out.  I may even have to put on my socks soon.  I definitely need to haul out the winter clothing.  That is tomorrow's project.

Our hydro was out for a couple of hours after I got home so I finished a book I was reading and then fell asleep for  half an hour.  Most of southern Ontario is supposed to get severe weather tomorrow.  I don't have to go anywhere so will make sure my tablet is charged so I can play games or read in case the power goes again.  If it stays out very long, we can turn on the generator.

I hope you all had a great and safe day,

Blessings,

Gnomes are Ready for Winter

Thank you to all who took time to sympathize with my back pain. It is feeling quite a bit better today so I was able to do some stretching to move things along.  I appreciate all your comments regarding cataract surgery as well.  I confess I have been reluctant to get it done based on one friends reaction.  I am going in to the optometrists on Thurs to get my new lenses and I will ask what the wait time is for the procedure.  I should be okay with the new prescription for at least a year so if the wait time is longer than that, I could book it now.

We got a good bit of the outside work done today.  Gnomes are snug in their winter totes, the cover is off the gazebo and the hummingbird feeders are inside.  I have to fix a tear on the cover before storing it.  There is still a bit of yard work to do: raking leaves, covering the perennials and cutting back some plants.

I got some quilting done as well.  I guess I should say sewing rather than quilting as I was making face masks.  I didn't think people would still be wanting the hand made ones now there are so many commercially produced masks but there is still a demand.  I like using theme fabrics such as hedgehogs, dogs, cats, deer as well as brightly covered material. If we have to wear these things, we may as well have fun.

One last fall photo.  One of my favourites.

Charming

Happy Monday.  I seem to have lost a week.  I hurt my back and have spent the better part of a week not doing much of anything except moaning.  It still isn't good but is a bit better.  I was able to go to quilting today and made sure I got up and walked around frequently.  The problem with a sore back is that both sitting and walking hurts but you need to move or it makes the situation worse.  Dear hubby has been great doing what he can to help.

I got my eyes checked on Friday and it took over an hour and a half as I hadn't been in nearly two years.  Apparently, I am borderline for driving although my new lenses will fix that.  I am also a candidate for cataract surgery but I am going to put that off as long as possible.

The weather has started cooling down a bit so I need to get the garden finished and ready for winter.  Time to get out the winter clothing as well.  I have been wearing a pair of fleecy pajama bottoms around the house.  They are so comfortable.

I bought a new quilt book with patterns for charm squares.  I have enough of those squares to make quilts for everyone in the village.  I would like to set myself a goal of doing one every other month but I have so many UFO's that I am going to have to leave it for a while.  Perhaps I will do a UFO and then a charm quilt.

Quilting Behind Bars

A friend sent me a report on a prison where the inmates are making quilts that are donated to children.  Not only were these men learning a skill while helping others but they were also helping themselves.  All of them reported feeling for the first time that what they did mattered.
Those of us who are quilters already know that feeling.  Donating our creations to help others is a big part of what we do.  When we aren't giving quilts, we share fabric, knowledge and friendship.  Quilters know that when you give; you receive.  What you receive might not buy groceries or cause others to see you as important but it does give you peace and, as the prisoners discovered, the knowledge that what you do matters.
I think that is particularly important right now when there seems to be so much division and hatred.  I am disappointed that in a time when we need each other for support and encouragement, we face animosity and judgement.  Perhaps the whole world needs to stop everything for one day and, instead of demanding rights that they haven't earned, they would look for ways to help. It might be even better if we all just turned off the computer and volunteered to read to children in the hospital, clean an elderly or disabled persons house, sit and really talk to a street person or anything else that would help them understand what is really important in this world.

Driving Woes.

Our leaves are starting to fall and the colours are fading.  Heidi and I walked through a deep carpet of crispy leaves today.  I had more fun than she did while kicking the leaves into the air.  She was more interested in sniffing at the same spots that draws her interest every time we go through the bush.

I had a bit of a mishap yesterday. I stopped at our church to do the Thanksgiving decorations and when I left I went through the parking lot to the side road as it is less busy.  There was a bit of a dip so I eased the car into in and-got stuck.  The dip was deep enough that my front bumper was touching the road surface.  Of course, my cell phone didn't get any service so I couldn't call hubby.  I was just going back into the church when a lady came to get her mail from the boxes located on the property.  Her phoned worked so I explained the situation to hubby and he said he was on his way.  The church is only a couple minutes from the house so I knew he wouldn't be long.  Another vehicle pulled into the parking lot while I waited and the driver asked if he could help.  He had a shovel and dug all around the front end. Unfortunately that didn't help.  Hubby arrived and tried towing me out.  That didn't work.  Another man in a heavy truck came and he had a good chain.  At this point, I was beginning to feel like I was in the middle of a country song.  He hitched  up the chain, I got in the car and bingo! I was out.  I thanked everyone profusely as did my husband and home we went.

Hubby went into the village later and said that side of the parking lot had been roped off.  I suspect it was the second man as he lived right near.

I appreciate very much both men who stopped to help and am thankful that people still care about others,

Autumn

I enjoyed reading the comments from Judy and Karen about the talented artisans in their family.  You ladies are blessed.

I have spent most of today unquilting.  I finished a small Christmas wall hanging some time ago and now have decided I don't like the quilting.  It is nice and sunny outside so I took my work outdoors.  I have most of it unpicked and can finish it while watching television.

I took my camera when Heidi and I went for out walk.  These are all on our property.

Inheritances

Another rainy day although the sun is shining at the moment.  I was expecting to finish up the top for the charity quilt that I have been working on but I am going to have to put it aside for a bit.  I got a notice that some of the items I have in a local store have sold so, now I need to make at least one more baby quilt and some face masks.  I am certainly not complaining.  It is wonderful to know that someone likes something I have made well enough to add it to their home.  Knowing that a child will be cuddling up with my creation for a long time is wonderful.  It may even be handed down to other children or the next generation.

I wish I owned a quilt that had been made by my mother or other relative but none of them (to my knowledge) quilted.  My relatives will not have the same complaint!

Have you inherited your love of quilting from a family member?  It is interesting how some skills do get passed down.  Photography is an inherited trait in my family that goes back at least as far as my father.  It is a passion of mine and I have a nephew who is an award winning professional. Judging from photos posted on social media, there are others who also have the bug.

In hubby's family, there are many artists and singers.  A friend's family are known for their musical ability and another for cooking.  It is nice to know that along with inheriting certain personality traits, appearances and builds that we might also become a famous singer like great aunt Clara.

Gnomes

Autumn is definitely in the air here in the backwoods.  It has finally quit raining (at least for a few days) so the changing leaves are able to show their glory in the sunlight.  They haven't completed the change over yet but are about a third of the way there.  Some trees seem to change overnight, others are more gradual.  The latter ones are often the most colourful.  The evergreens add a lovely backdrop making their more vibrant neighbours stand our against their various shades of green.

We have started taking our netted gazebo down.  The curtain is off and laying on the deck to complete drying.  I have to fix a rip in the canopy before it is stored away.  After that comes packing up the family of gnomes and winterizing the garden.

Speaking of gnomes, we visited one of our new neighbours yesterday evening to play euchre and get to know each other. During the conversations, she mentioned making gnomes.  Hubby and I love these little people and were anxious to see her creations.  She is very talented.  I am hoping to get her to join our arts and crafts group.

Sad Event

It has been a very busy week and, on top of the appointments, our hydro was out twice.  We had our newly renovated generator delivered today and hubby is building a stand with wheels for it so we can get it into place easily.  I have never wanted a generator previously but find that, as I get older, I am getting less tolerant of coping with no running water and worrying about everything in the freezer's going bad.

We are continuing to get rain every day although it did stop long enough today for Heidi and I to go for a bit of a walk through the bush.  I decided to take a different path today and it was interesting watching Heidi pick the route.  As she is so little, the path she picks is always easy for me to use as well but just to make sure I am okay, she pauses periodically to look back at me.  It is almost as though she is saying 'is this path okay for you?'

The grandchildren had a sad event today.  The family had a mixed breed dog named Brandy who was  much loved,  She had been diagnosed with cancer earlier and today had to be put to sleep.  Devastating for the children but hard for the adults as well.  A lot of people on Facebook knew Brandy as her exploits were often shared by one of her owners.  She will be greatly missed.

I didn't get much quilting done this week but did spend a bit of time today working on the blocks I started the previous week.  I promised this lap quilt to someone for the winter and it is getting cool enough now that I better get at it.

Happy autumn,

Quilting Home Coming

We had a great turn out for our first quilting session after shut down.  A couple of ladies didn't make it because of pre commitments but everyone else was there.  We were able to maintain the proper distance from each other and ate our lunch at our tables.  One of the ladies brought two of the tops she had completed for a show and tell.  Another had started a new craft-she always has amazing things to share.  She is also working on a hexi quilt so we are able to pass our scraps on to her.

It was just so wonderful to be together, to quilt, chat and share.  One lady said it was like coming home again.  Next week, we will need to show our proof of vaccine but as all of us have had both that won't be a problem.  (Judy, sorry to read that your group got shut down again.)

If you are Canadian you will know we have the most useless election imaginable.  Millions of dollars spent to achieve the same result as pre election.  The money could have been used for so much good.

My cranberry crabapple jelly turned out well but quite sweet.  I still have another bushel of apples so will make some more but reduce the sugar quite a bit.  I don't like sweet.

We are supposed to get a heave rainfall tomorrow.  I am glad we are on a hill.

Apple Bounty

We had a tornado warning Tuesday night so I spent a lot of time looking out the window and checking the clouds.  We can't see a lot of the sky because of all the trees but I figured that as long I could see some of it we would get a warning if everything went really dark.  Fortunately, we just got a nasty lightning and heavy rain storm.  The hydro didn't even go out.
The rest of the week has been great and tomorrow we are going out on a friends pontoon boat.  It is supposed to be in the high twenties so it should be a nice day.
I finished cleaning the studio today.  I got rid of a lot of bits and pieces that I wasn't ever going to use and put them in a bag for a friend who loves odd bits of scraps.  This is the stack of nine inch squares that I have ready to use.  There are over 30 so that should make a nice sized quilt.

This pile of 2.5 inch strips have been set aside to teach my granddaughter how to do a jelly roll quilt so she will have something to take home after her holiday here.
After I had everything done, I took a last look at the totes piled against one wall and saw one I didn't recognize.  It was full of scraps!  I couldn't face doing anymore sorting so it can wait until later.  Saturday I am going to be making crabapple jelly and pickled crabapples from the bounty my sister-in-law brought.

Sorting Done

Last week seemed to be power outage time.  In addition to earlier in the week, it was out again on Friday.  And our generator didn't work.  We have never used one before but I was getting a bit tired of candles and battery operated lights and radios so hubby got one ready for use.  Of course, it started up without problem every time it was tested and then didn't on Friday.

I have completed the reorganizing of all my fabric as well as cutting scraps.  I have three totes with non quilting fabric that needs to be checked but they can wait.  I also need to have a list of the finished quilts that are in the chest as well as find a home for all the batting.  My backing is all on hangers and stored in the guest room closet.  It makes it so much easier to see what I have as well as keeping it crease free.

I haven't counted the nine inch squares that I cut from the scraps yet.  I am probably going to need more as the quilt top I have planned will take at least 20.  I am looking forward to working on this when our quilt group gets back together a week today. So looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Getting Motivated

I don't seem to be able to get myself motivated today.  I have done a bit more fabric sorting and cutting scraps into useful sizes but am really not into it.  I would much rather just lay down and sleep. Nothing is stopping me from doing that but I don't think it is a good idea to waste a whole day. Perhaps I need to set myself a goal.  Do ten more fabrics and then see how I feel.

I wrote that this morning and took my own advice.  After I did the 10 fabrics, I kept going and did get quite a bit done before stopping and taking the dog for a walk.  I am cutting a lot of nine inch squares as that seems the be the largest size I can get from the majority of scraps.  I am going to use them  for a pattern called Chop and Sew.  It is an old one designed by From the Nest Designs.  They don't seem to be in business anymore as I tried to find the link to share with you.

This is a great pattern to use up odd bits and pieces to make charity quilts.  The pattern calls for 15 inch squares but, as I said, my scraps aren't that large.  I will just do 20 squares instead of 12. I made it once before quite a few years ago.  A photo is at the end of this post.

Hubby and I have been watching the Blue Jay baseball games and are pleased with how our favourite team is doing.  It would be great to see them get the pennant this year.

The Flip Side

Our hydro is flickering so I hope it doesn't go out.  There is a severe weather watch for parts of Central Ontario although not where we live.  However, we are getting a heavy rainfall.

The past two days I have been getting a lot done in the quilt room.  I have nearly all the fabrics stored on shelves but still have a large pile of smaller pieces.  I think I am going to cut them into 12.5 inch squares and use those to make charity quilts.

I was going to load a customer quilt today but as the frame is covered in fabric, that it is going to have to wait.

What do you do with all your batting pieces?  I have stuffed mine into large clear bags but then I have to pull everything out whenever I am looking for a certain size.  Perhaps I should measure, mark and fold before putting in the bag.  It seems to take so long to get everything organized that you don't have time left to quilt.  Of course, some of you may not ever get into that state.  Unfortunately, I am not a clean as you go quilter.  I don't expect I will change so will just have to learn to accept that this is the way I am.  On the flip side, it bothers me if the rest of the house is untidy.  That is no doubt a good thing,

Quilt Group is Starting

Another cool day which I love but our granddaughter tells me it is warm in Alberta so I guess our temperatures will be going up again. I finished the little quilt I made for the neighbor's young lad that is starting kindergarten and will deliver that on Sunday.

When Heidi and I went for our walk today, I remembered something I forgot for our anniversary.  I always put aside one of the loaves of Christmas cake so we can have it as part of our anniversary celebration.  I took it out of the freezer when I got home and we had a piece for supper.  Which then reminded me that I better start gathering the ingredients for this years Christmas cakes.

The Burk's Falls Village Quilters are getting back together this month.  I have reserved the hall for the 20th and the majority of the ladies say they are going to be able to make it.  I feel as though my world has tilted back to where it should be.  It is going to be so good seeing everyone.

Here is another quilt I finished last week.

Who is Elderly?

We have had a lovely anniversary celebration and have a funny story to tell as a bonus.  We went to the village's only nice restaurant for supper on Saturday and had a lovely, reasonable priced meal.  Hubby ordered a starter dish of deep fried onion rings, cheese, zucchini etc. which was delicious.  It was also enough to fill us up. However, we still had our main course which, for me was grilled pickerel with home fries. I made it through the fish but the majority of the fries came home with me.

Our server who owned the businesses stopped to chat for a bit.  He had moved here from the south (familiar story) to be closer to his elderly mother who, although she was still 'sharp as a tack' (his words) her physical health was failing.  She was having mobility issues but he thought she was still doing well  for 77.  I just about choked.  77 is elderly and expected to be in poor health!!  I am 75.  I don't think of myself as elderly.  Still the meal was good and we will be back if I can get my doddering self into the vehicle.

Hubby gave me a lovely set of pearl stud earrings which is something I have been wanting.

I have done really well in sales this month.  I sold a quilt at our event on Saturday, some items at a craft store, and two other quilts earlier in the month.  I should be able to get myself a good quality cane to help me totter. This is the crib quilt I sold.

Happy Thirtieth Anniversary

I will be so glad when August is over.  It has been such a busy month.  Tomorrow is the Burk's Falls Art and Crafts Clubs big event in our local park.  Except it isn't.  Thunderstorms are predicted for Saturday
so we have changed our venue.  I have been too buy with club activities to get much made for the sale but I do have a couple of quilts as well as face mask and other smaller items.

Monday, we start removing all out belongs from our current location as the Village is selling the building.  It has to be stored somewhere else until we obtain a new building.  Monday is also hubby and mine 30 anniversary.  It is hard to believe we have been married that long.  It doesn't seem much more than ten years until I start looking back at all we have done together.

My hubby is the perfect man for me.  He has given me the confidence to be myself, makes me feel protected but not stifled and loves me more than I can understand.  I can only hope that he knows how much I appreciate and love him,

Blessings,

Go Jays

We have had a week of really hot weather (over 30 C) and with it came a nasty headache that didn't surrender even when I took a Tylenol.  It has eased a bit today so I was able to finish the crib quilt I had on the frame as well as add a sleeve to a wall hanging.  I hope to have the binding finished on the quilt tomorrow and load another project.

I am so looking forward to September when my schedule will lessen.  I am sure other things will pop up but the Burk's Falls Art and Crafts Centre will be closed for the season so that will free more hours.  I think we have found a new location for it but there really isn't any rush as we don't reopen until May.

Sunday is one day I try to keep more or less free.  There is supper to get and a few household chores but that is it.  If there is a game on, hubby and I usually watch the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball.  They have been part of our life since before we were married.  I was offered tickets a couple of times but I don't like crowds or noise so would rather watch on television.  If I want a cup or tea or to go to the toilet, it is easily done.

It is still 29 C today but it is supposed to be a bit cooler tonight.  Here's hoping.

Friends

A couple of friends and I helped another friend with packing her belongings.  She and her husband are going to be moving from their large, lovely home at the beginning of next month.  As is always the case, the amount of stuff you have grows with the space you have available.  Consequently, they have a ton of belongings.  As she is a quilter, much of what we packed was fabric, fabric, fabric.  We made fairly good progress in the one area and she will have more help this week.  I am not sure where everything is going to be housed in the new place as they are downsizing quite a bit.  I can see some good garage sales in the future!

I thought I would be stiff and achy today but I must be in better condition than I thought as I haven't felt any effect from the unusual activity.  I added the last borders to my baby quilt and fixed a friends sewing machine today.  As it is Tuesday, I video messaged with my baby sister in the morning.  My internet was acting up but we did manage to stay in contact.

I have mentioned previously that I am fond of quotes.  Here is one I found recently.  As I have been talking about friends, I thought it appropriate.  "A friend is someone you can call at 4.00 a.m. and they are glad to hear from you."

Trial and Error

When you make a quilt top, do you plan out each step or make it up as you go along?  I tend to do the latter.  I have a basic idea of borders plain and pieced as well as colours but everything can change as I go along.  I guess it is different if a person uses a pattern but as I don't then it can be trial and error.

For example, I am making a crib quilt.  The top has a centre panel.  I wanted it to be bright because the panel itself isn't.  I did a yellow border and then a red one but I didn't want just plain strips so decided to add alternating yellow and lime green squares.  The second row would make it a checkerboard.  However, when I laid out the second row, it seemed to overpower everything else.  I am now going to leave it at the one row, add a red strip, a wider black to match the panel background and perhaps another narrow red.  I will use the unused block strips as binding.  Or , at least, that is the plan.  It could change again.

I will post a photo when it gets done.

Happy Birthday Heidi

We had a gully washer last night.  The rain fell in sheets  along with wild winds, accompanied by thunder and lightening.  The hydro flickered a couple of times but, fortunately, stayed on.  I am sure that trees were knocked down somewhere in the area.  A friend said her driveway was washed out in places and I sure ours is as well.  We haven't checked that yet.  There was around 6 inches of accumulation were we park the car but it was gone quickly.

Today is our Heidi's birthday.  She will be getting extra liver and, of course, lots of cuddles.  She is now a teenager and still is good health other than a bit of stiffness.  As her age is almost equivalent to mine she is doing pretty well.

I have almost finished the top for a baby quilt and then will do another.  These will be for sale.  And then I have some customer tops to do.

(Hubby was going into the village and had to come back and get a saw as a small tree was across the driveway!)

Another Quilt Sold

I have had a tiring week but a productive one.  Yesterday was my turn to staff the Burk's Falls Art and Crafts Centre and we had a busy day which kept the other lady and I hopping.  This year it seems that Thursday is busier that Friday or Saturday.  Not sure why it is but we are glad that we are doing so well this year.  I think part of the reason our sales are up is that people are ready to go into a building, see actual merchandise and be able to actually handle it.

You can almost feel the happiness in peoples voices as they enter the store.  Of course, we have wonderful products and amazing salespeople so that all helps!

I was very pleased when one couple bought a quilt as a wedding gift for their son.  This is another sign that life is getting back to normal.  When many people where not sure how their income would be affected by the pandemic, purchases where limited to the essentials. I bought a non essential myself this week.  I am wearing a lot more flats than heels now so I got myself a pair of lovely leather shoes that can be worn with almost everything.  I will now get rid of two or three pairs that I have and don't really like.

Birds of a Feather

I finished my customer quilt yesterday and it will be delivered tomorrow when we go to visit my mother-in -law.  I quilted this with ivy leaves in the borders and outlines stitched the birds, flowers and feeder.  Smaller leaves were used as filler.  I am pleased with how it turned out and hope the customer will the as well. I have named it "Birds of a Feather"

I have started working on a crib quilt today.  I am using a panel for this quilt as well.  I have quite a few of those that I have bought through the years so I think it is time I used them.

It is warmer today although not up to seasonal.  It is nice enough to do some work outdoors-I pulled weeds and helped hubby cutting wood, without getting overly warm.

Hope you have enjoyed your long weekend.

Changing Leaves

This is news that some of you would rather not hear:  our trees have been changing colour for a couple of weeks now.  This is early.  Usually we see the change in August so I am not sure if we are going to have an early winter or whether some of the trees are stressed from all the rain.

It doesn't matter to me if winter comes early although I don't feel I have really got into summer yet.  The rain has stopped a lot of the outdoor activities and even just sitting on the deck isn't an option.  Of course, it has been hard on our farmer friends who are trying to get the hay done so the animals will have feed for the winter.

Our vegetables are doing really well so we should have lots of tomatoes, pumpkin, beans, potatoes, beets and whatever else has been planted.

I took one of the completed quilts to its new owner on the weekend and she was really pleased with how it turned out.  I have the binding to do on another and it will be off to its home as well.

Quilt Finished

Henrietta is behaving today and adjusted to her new home.  We have a few bantam hens and you are never sure just what they are going to do.  We had one that wouldn't come in without a lot of frustration.  One night it few into a tree.  Nothing we did could get it down and into the coop so we left it there.  The next night, it was the first one inside.

I finished my customer quilt today and just have to do some trimming and add the border.  I am pleased with the way it turned out and hope it gives the customer many years of use.

I was cool last night while watching television so pulled a quilt over myself.  I wonder what people use that don't quilt?  A purchased blanket I guess although that doesn't seem to be anywhere near as cosy.

I have a busy week coming.  I am getting together with some friends on Monday afternoon.  Tuesday I Zoom with my sister, Wednesday hubby is going for his second shot, Thursday I am at the Art Centre.  I also have a meeting Wed. evening as well as another on either Wed. or Thurs.  I will be glad to see the weekend when it comes.

Henrietta Houdini

Hubby picked up our new hen this afternoon and got her settled in her brooding area.  A couple of hours later he looked outside and there she was wandering around the yard.  How she managed to get out we don't know but, out she was.  When you are surrounded by bush and long grass/weeds, there are lots of places for one small hen to hide.  We tried drawing her out by throwing some feed around but that didn't work.  The blackbirds were grateful for the buffet.  I tried calling her as our other hens will come when I do that.  No luck there either.

We finished supper and watched the news until it was time to put the other chickens in for the night.  When hubby came back, he had good news.  Henrietta Houdini or HH for short (her new name) was back in the coop and her special area.  At least we know that she knows where she lives.  Mr. T. the rooster gave her a  talking to as well so hopefully there won't be any more henventures.

Baby Chicks?

We had a short but nasty thunderstorm here today.  With memories of last week's tornado still much in the area news, I kept a close eye on the sky.  Highly unlikely anything would happen here but weather does what it wants.

I had been working on a quilt so I turned off the sewing machine as well as the computer when the hydro started flickering.
Although I have them plugged into surge protector's , I didn't see any need to take a chance. I played card games on my tablet until everything blew other and then went back to work.

It is a bit cooler today so I made a couple containers of apple crisp for hubby.  My recipe makes too much of the topping so I used extra fruit, put that in a small baking dish and used the surplus on it.  This is my husband's favourite dessert so I make it fairly often.  Heated and topped with vanilla ice cream makes for a decadent end for the meal.

We are picking up a new hen from a friend tomorrow.  It is showing signs of wanting to hatch eggs and they don't need any more chickens so we will take her.  Hopefully, she will continue brooding when we bring her home.  We have been trying to hatch our own chicks for some time now but none of our hens are cooperating.

Now You Tell Me

A scary day for the people south of us.  A tornado touched down a couple hours south.  There has been a good bit of damage, 8 people injured 4 seriously.  That area is prone to tornados and in 1985 had one of the worst in Canada.  I was living closer to the area then and knew one of the people injured.

Other than doing some shopping and getting a long needed haircut, I have spent most of the day quilting.  I had a frustrating time at the grocery store.  I try to be patient when it is a situation that isn't anyone's fault but I do get irritated when it could have been handled more efficiently.  When I got to the store, there was a bit of a line up but it moved quickly.  A young employee was waving each person through when it was time (this is important for later.) I zipped around and got my items and, when it was my turn, got everything on the conveyer I belt.  I packed my own bags and then went to pay.  The clerk wasn't really focused on me at all and it took a while for her to get the pin pad ready.  I did my thing and waited for longer than normal and then got a message that said it hadn't gone through.  I had to get the tellers attention and we did it again, same result.  I asked her why I was having problems and she told me that the system was down.  Now you tell me.  After a bit more fiddling around, I left my groceries to go to a bank machine and hair appointment.  Back to the store to pay for my items.  There were a few more delays and I was done.  My complaint is that the entrance employee should have advised customers there was a problem and they would need cash.

I informed those waiting in line of the situation and one couple left as they didn't have cash.

Hope everyone is safe and enjoying their day,

Birds at REst.

All morning, I have been expecting it to rain so I didn't plan any outdoor activities.  As 3 p.m. rolled around and nothing happened, I decided to take Heidi for her walk.  I no sooner had I got ready and stepped out doors than the drops started falling.  I thought we would be okay going through the bush as the trees make a good canopy.  However, that didn't work out either.  It started to pour by the time we reached the trail and then it began to thunder.  Back we went.  Heidi was pretty damp by the time we got inside so I rubbed her with a towel and added a second treat to the once she gets when we have been out.

I have now gone back to getting a quilt loaded on to my frame, thread chosen, bobbin filled and practice run completed so I am ready to go.

This is the top I am doing.  I haven't decided on a quilting stitch yet so will be thinking about that as I am making supper.

Cursive Quilting

It has been really cool the past couple of days.  Tuesday I made some scone and a cake both gluten free.  This morning it was cold enough that hubby lit the wood stove.  It is supposed to start warming up again tomorrow but, other than it isn't good for the veggies, I rather like the cool weather.

I finished my quilt today and hope to get another on the frame tomorrow.  Have you ever written on a quilt.  I have often done that.  I have used a person's name and special dates if it is a memory quilt and phrased that reflect someone's life if it is a gift.  I did a lot of writing on the quilt I just finished and interspersed it with hearts as the customer really likes them.

The quilt was made of squares of flannel and sewn together.  The border was a strip of coordinating fabric as you can see from this photo.

This is what quilted writing looks like.  This is the back of the quilt so the words are mirror image.  the border was done in hearts.  The customer doesn't want a border that will be noticeable so I am going to try something new.  I often do self borders (wrap backing to the front, fold under a 1/4 inch and sew.  I am going to do the same with this one except I will fold the top to the back.  As the fabric is all flannel, I will do a test sew and make sure it doesn't stretch before continuing.

Blessings,

Busy Barbers

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to post today as my internet went down.  I am not sure why but possibly there was a storm somewhere.

It has been cooler but humid today and the temperature is really doing to drop tomorrow.  I am looking forward to doing a bit of baking.

We went into the village today to get a few things done and, while there, my husband noticed his hairdresser was sitting outside.  He asked if she had an opening and she did as someone didn't show up. He was really fortunate.  I haven't even tried to get an appointment yet.  I bet barbers and hairdressers are run off their feet right now.

I am pleased to hear our new Governor General is a indigenous woman.  I thought she would be and the woman chosen seems to be well qualified.

A slow news day today but, as we have just celebrated Canada Day, I thought I would share this link with you.   https://canadiansatarms.ca/we-are-canadian/

Line Up Conversations

I mentioned last week that I had been having problems getting my tablet connected to WiFi.  I tried everything I could think of plus the advice of others (thanks, Deb), but nothing worked.  I decided I was just going to have to buy another tablet although I was sure the problem was with my internet.  Friday I switched it on and I was connected.  It stayed on until yesterday and now it is gone again.  I am going to have to phone my provider although I hate doing that because you have to repeat all the things you have already done.

A lot of Canada is experiencing a heat wave.  There have been numerous deaths resulting from it.  We are still around normal temperatures here although it has been raining for quite a while.  I only have 4 more row to finish on my quilt and then I can get another loaded.  I have so many quilts I want to do but there are so many other things that keep claiming my time.  Perhaps I will have to leave the computer turned off one day a week to see if I accomplish more.

My husband was shopping today and there were line ups everywhere.  Usually the beginning of the week isn't bad but with a long weekend coming up the tourists had arrived early.  As he was waiting for his turn, he started chatting with another person (he always does this.  A very friendly man), and  (I can't remember how the topic came up) he mentioned that I am a quilter.  The lady was very interested as she had been wanting to learn the craft.  Hubby gave her my company name so I am looking forward to hearing from her.

Stay cool if you are in one of the heat wave areas.

WiFi Woes

This isn't quilting related or not directly but I am hoping that someone might have a suggestion for me.  I have not been able to connect my tablet to my internet for some time..  There hasn't been any trouble with the desk top or hubby's lap top but the tablet will not connect no matter what I do.  I am going to take it to the library tomorrow to try their WiFi .  I don't think it is the tablet because I have an old laptop which hasn't been used for a while and it won't connect either.

It is an irritation because I use the tablet quite a bit especially for reading books.

I had a thought today which I am going to do.  I mentioned yesterday about the goody bag we got and I think I am going to make some place mats to donate to the organization. They can be handed out to the seniors at Christmas.  I will have to be sure to mark that down on my calendar or it won't get done.

Hair Salon's Opening!!

It is wonderful to hear that Ontario is moving into another opening phase.  I will even be able to get a hair cut next Wednesday!  I usually wait a bit after the salons open to give those who are employed a chance first.  I am looking forward to seeing our television news media and politicians look a bit less shaggy.

We had a nice surprise today.  A lovely lady from a local agency arrived with an 'isolation' bag of goodies for us.  I love being a senior.  The bag contained some soup, hygiene products, a powerful flashlight and quite a few activity items such as cards, games and  puzzles.  One of the games involves identifying the photos of well know people.  We will have fun with that one.

It is still a bit on the cooler side so I have been getting a lot done.  Pulled some weeds, wrote my magazine article and did some other things that kept getting put off.

Tomorrow I hope to have the quilt top all but done as well as getting my items ready for the opening of the Burk's Falls Art and Craft Centre on July 1.  It has been a long time coming and the members are excited at having the store operational again.

Great Customer Service.

The quilt on my frame is getting done quickly.  The owner said she wasn't in a hurry but I have a ton of others waiting to be finished.  It has been coolish and raining for the past couple of days so it is good weather to be indoors and quilting.

I also took advantage of the cooler days to do a bit of baking.  I made my husband some date squares and a fruit crisp for Father's Day.  Two of his favourite desserts.

We got out new pressure pump installed on Friday  but we had problems with, what seemed to be, air in the pipes.  I suggested we call the well people but hubby thought we just needed to run the water for a while and it would clear up.  It didn't.  Have you ever tried to take a shower with the water hissing and spitting at you?  By the next Friday I had had enough and called the company.  As it was after hours, I left a phone message and an email one just to make sure.  Early Monday morning, we got a call saying they had the message, all the service people where out that day but somebody would come today-Tuesday.  Wendy called before nine to say when the man would be here.  He was.  Found the pump was faulty and changed it and we don't have any more problems.  We are really impressed with the customer service of this company.  I am looking forward to my quiet shower tomorrow,

Lots of Projects

Congratulations, Karen, on finishing your daughter's birthday quilt.  I bet she is going to love it.  Would you like to share a photo?

I have had an eventful day.  I got up to find that there was a problem with our water.  We were getting dirt in the sink and the taps and toilets weren't working properly.  We thought at first the well might have gone dry which, although we haven't had much rain, didn't seem likely.  Hubby thought it had something to do with the pump and a hefty service call and repair bill later, he was proven right.  The pressure pump had gone.

A friend came over this afternoon with the first top that has made  wanted me to quilt.  I got her to help me load it onto the machine and we discussed the pattern she wanted.  It is a scrappy made of squares of flannel from all the pajamas she made for her children.  There was also one from a dear family member that died when he was three.  I just love memory quilts and suggested that adding the names of the children to the quilting  would add to the specialness.  She mentioned that some of the things they said would also be a good idea.  I am waiting for her to write that down and then I can get started.  In the meantime, I did some more work on my sister-in-law's quilt and received news that I am getting a number of tops from a friend so I can finish them and donate to a charity.  I don't think I will every be caught up but it is nice to be busy.

Heidi's Vet Visit

It has been so hot that breathing has been an effort.  Dear hubby installed the AC today so that makes things a lot more bearable.  We are still having salad's for supper so it isn't necessary to turn on the oven but I am really hoping things cool down a bit.

I took our little Heidi to the vet on Monday and found out that the dry spots on the side of her mouth is because she has a bad molar and has been rubbing her face.  I was rather surprised because , up to this point, they have always remarked on how healthy her teeth are especially given her age.  We are glad it isn't anything more serious.

It looks like things are opening up a bit here in Ontario so the Burk's Falls Art and Crafts Centre is making plans to open the end of this month.  Hopefully, we don't get any more serious outbreaks.

You may have heard about the hate crime in one of Ontario's cities where a young man deliberately ran into a visible minority family.  The 90 year old grandmother, parents and 15 year old girl was killed-murdered, really.  The only survivor is a nine year old.  I cannot fathom how you can be driving along a street, see a family waiting to cross the intersection and deliberately turn the steering wheel so you can run them over.  I cannot understand that kind of hate.

It has been too hot to do a lot of sewing but I have done bits and pieces.  There are only two more borders to be added to the top I am working on and I will be able to get it on the frame,

Breeding T Shirts

Yesterday was tiring.  I always try to avoid  shopping on Thursdays in the summer as that is when a lot of the tourists arrive.  This week, however, it was the only day we had free so off we went.  As soon as we saw  the number of vehicles heading north, we knew we were going to have crowded stores.  To make things worse, not all tills were being used so the cashiers could be far enough apart and  safe from the virus.  I certainly didn't have a problem with that.  Most tellers are facing enough difficulties at work from angry and unreasonable customers without also having to put themselves at risk.

It didn't take me long to pick up a few groceries as this wasn't my big shopping but I almost put everything back when I saw the check out line.  Everyone was in a single file waiting their turn at the till and the line reach a good 1/3 of the way around the store.  I did eventually have my turn and, fortunately the ice cream hadn't melted.  Back home, put away shopping, have lunch and relax until supper time.

I have started purging some of my clothing today.  I have far too much of everything.  I am sure my T shirts are breeding as I keep getting rid of some and the next season, there are just as many.  The whole house could use  a good bit of sorting and tossing but that will have to wait until it is cooler.

Blessings,
