Our little dog started going lame in her hind legs on Sunday and is still having problems. Sometimes she is able to walk fine and the next, she is hopping on three legs. I have a vet appointment for her and am hoping it is arthritis and can be treated.

As she will be 16 this August, we are prepared for deteriorating health but, as long as she isn't in pain, we will continue to do what we can for her. We have also taken on the raising of a baby chick that was abandoned by her (I hope) mother. She is in a cat carrier with food and water and a nest made of quilt batting. She seems to be doing well.

I finally finished the quilt that was on the long arm frame. My ability to follow a pantograph pattern improved enough as I neared the end that I am sure I will be able to do this again. However, this quilt will be cut up into table runners and placemats.

I want to take the Q'nique and table apart and clean and rebalance everything. Because the base is wood, it gets off kilter sometimes.

The weather here is warm and sunny. We sat outside on the deck for a bit yesterday and I was able to walk through the bush. I miss being able to take Heidi and hope she will be mobile enough to go again soon.

Blessings,

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-22177933622354757452024-03-06T11:25:00.003-05:002024-03-06T14:38:06.267-05:00Creativity-The Key to Healthy Living
My family is very creative. Both my sister's and I are sewers-plus other crafts, one brother does pottery and cement sculptures and while the other leans a bit more to physical activities.

I am not sure where all this talent came from as our mother didn't do anything like that for fun (although she had little free time to do anything with 5 children in 8 years). Dad was able to do most things such as fix cars, etc.

I was thinking about all this when the older of my two sisters sent a photo of a doll she made. I am so impressed. The youngest sister is working on a antique quilt all hand done.

Being creative, I believe, keeps your brain young. It also provides beauty for your environment, gifts for others and a sense of accomplishment that keeps our mental state balanced.

I love the way the doll's little ears poke through her hair as that is a family trait. It was raining this morning which changed to freezing rain and now it is snowing. I imagine the driving conditions are really bad. Hubby and I don't need to go out except to feed the chickens so we are warm and snug with the wood stove giving off a nice glow and warmth.

I am making more progress in learning how to use a pantograph for quilting. I am getting more control in following the line although there is still some shakiness. My biggest problem has always been getting the next row lined up properly. I figured out the principal but was still having a problem. I got my husband to come and show me (no, he doesn't quilt). I think I may understand it now. I seem to have a spatial problem which prevents me from figuring out whether I start at the top or bottom of the pattern.

One of the things I like about quilting is that there is always something to know and plenty of people to help. My younger sister has recently taken up sewing again and needed my help on a stitch she wanted to do. Fortunately we both have the same machine make so it was an easy solution. Sometimes, you know what to do but need a little of feedback to make sure you were on the right track. I was so pleased to be able to assure her she was doing the right thing and, once again so thankful for the internet.

I am 'meeting' my latest customer on line later to talk over fabric placement. Again, thank you, internet. I know there are people using this medium for dreadful reasons and not enough is being done to protect the vulnerable but I find it is one of the more valuable tools I have.

Do you have a favourite quilting site? Mine is run by Connie Kreskin. She has a ton of free patterns as well as those you can buy.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-35773527855251627672024-02-22T14:04:00.004-05:002024-02-22T14:04:44.577-05:00Snow Day
This has been an odd week. We has so much snow on the weekend that church was cancelled-no one could get out. After an accumulation of about 18 inches, the temperatures warmed up and now the snow is melting again. We cancelled our quilt group meeting on Monday as well for the same reason. Our driveway hadn't been plowed and, although I could get out, the chances were good that I wouldn't be able to get back up the hill to the house.

I took advantage of the extra home time to bake, do some extra house work and catch up on my quilting. While doing all that, we heard the sound of machinery coming up the driveway and figured it was our plow guy. Nope. It was our friend with his little John Deere tractor with a snow blower on the front. He did the driveway, a path to the chicken coop and took a shovel to the front steps. What a blessing. I was glad I had some fresh cookies to give him.

I took more to his wife went I walked over to pick up my parcel from Amazon. As the driver couldn't get up our driveway, I sent him there. An adventurous day.

I have finished the scout neck scarves and am now focusing on the quilt on my frame. I am still having trouble with using a panto but am determined to learn.

Blessings,

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-48335325703238478752024-02-15T11:38:00.001-05:002024-02-15T11:38:17.344-05:00Another Order
We have a weather warning in our area for a heavy snowfall. Hubby had to go into the village for a bit but I am staying snug indoors except for my walk this afternoon if I can see the road.

I have a new customer and she has ordered a crib quilt which will be different than any I have done previously. It will be in greys with some muted yellow which isn't the usual baby colours. The back, however, will be a nice bright yellow in minky fabric. Because this isn't a traditional crib quilt, the child will be able to use it for many years as a lap quilt. I think I will suggest this idea to future customers. This lady is also a quilter and, although she says she is a novice, is an accomplished one.

My previous customer picked up the pillow covers which were the last of her order. I am now making 14 scarves for the local Scout troupe and trying to get at the quilt which is on my frame. That will be donated to a animal shelter in our area. There is always lots of needs for quilts, isn't there? I have a friend that gives away nearly all the quilts she makes and keeps a list of organizations that can use them. I think I will do the same.

Our dratted little dog got into the cat food again despite our precautions. I have now put the cat dish on the guest bed which is rather high so Heidi can't jump up on it. While it is nice for being outdoors, I am concerned about the lack of moisture for farmers and the forests. I completed a crib quilt and delivered it to it's owner (sorry no photo) and yesterday got the last of the pillow covers done. Another quilt top is on the machine and I am completing a table mat set that I started ages ago. I can't find the pattern so am using the finished mats as a guide. Fortunately, I have the fabric pieces already cut out.

The quilt top and placemats are my projects for today. In the meantime, I have a large pot of chili beans cooking and then will make chili. The dog is sleeping by my feet and the cat is on my quilt chest where she can see outdoors. A bucolic scene. I was a bit concerned about Allie wanting to jump onto the long arm to sleep on the quilt but she isn't showing any inclination to do that. I would have to break her of the habit if she starts. I would never be able to get all the kitty hair from the quilt.

What are you working on? Do you find it easier to quilt when the weather is warmer or does the cold keep you indoors and sewing? The weather doesn't make a great deal of difference to me although I do appreciate a day of rain in the summer as I am more likely to sew then.

These photos aren't very clear but hopefully you can see the pillow covers. I have left the buttons and pocket on the check one, the other two are the front of a couple of t shirts. I have used zipper, button and velcro closures.

Blessings

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-61801194019284467352024-01-24T12:37:00.001-05:002024-01-24T12:37:11.781-05:00Another Health Worry
We have had another health related week of concern. Not my hubby this time but the dog. Heidi was passing a lot of diarrhea and not eating. Nothing we did seemed to help so, I made an appointment with the vet. I really thought we needed to be prepared for the worst.

She was given a thorough exam including blood work and all the results were good. In fact, the vet said she was in remarkable shape given her age. She had some sort of tummy upset. I was given some medication for her and, as she had an appointment for her annual inoculations a few days later, that was postponed for a week.

She has been gradually improving. She never did get lethargic or appear to be ill other than frequent trips outside for, mostly, unneeded bathroom trips. It is such a relief knowing that barring anything unforeseen, she will be with us for a while yet.

I am now back to quilting. I am working on 3 cushion covers to go with the two memory quilts I made. Then I have two baby quilts to make.

We are getting some warmer weather right now-0c-so we are going for longer walks. We need to prepare our snowshoe trail so we can get back to that. I really enjoy winter.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-88819395371995787042024-01-16T14:51:00.003-05:002024-01-16T14:51:56.925-05:00Still Snowing
It is still snowing. Other than a few breaks, it hasn't stopped since Saturday. It appears that winter is in a real rush to catch up with where it should be this time of year. Thankfully, it isn't cold nor is there any wind so it is comfortable being outside shovelling.

Our quilt group met for our usual Monday get together and, I wasn't sure how many would show up as most of us, myself included, live a good distance away. To my surprise and pleasure everyone but a lady who was in hospital, another who was away and a couple more with other concerns. There always seems to be a special air of joy when you do something that others think is crazy. We prided ourselves on being tough Canadian women!

I took a big bag of fabric scraps to cut into smaller bits. Most of the bits were turned into charm squares (my favourite size) and a few were larger. I still have a lot of cutting to do but there isn't a rush. After it is done, I will separate the charm squares into light and dark so they will be ready to use.

The new bootees I bought for Heidi are great. They go on easily and fasten securely so she doesn't lose them. Now I don't have to worry about her little feet getting too cold when we go for a walk.

Blessings

Another Winter Photo

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-36704697326293381652024-01-11T14:06:00.001-05:002024-01-11T14:06:33.686-05:00Done-Finally
I have finally finished organizing my studio. I have the projects that I am targeting to finish this year on top of a cupboard. In addition to quilts to make or finish, there is also fabric to cut into strips and squares. If I can manage keep things put away where they are supposed to be, I shouldn't have such a mess to clean up again. I have a very large bag filled with unwanted fabric that is going to our thrift store. I hope it will be something that someone can use.

I got my old laptop operational on Monday and am now getting it set up to use. Internet is on but I am having a problem getting it to accept my email. I guess it will be easier to just add a new one.

Heidi and I went for a walk down the driveway and onto the road. It isn't cold but there is a bit of ice underneath. My boots have a really good non slip sole which makes walking safer. I have ordered a new pair of bootees for the dog as all the ones I have are so hard to put on. I don't want her to freeze her tiny feet.

Hope you are all staying healthy. Hubby is still fighting the effects of RSV. He is slowly improving but still has a nasty cough.

Blessings,

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-30042345927891399902024-01-06T11:19:00.001-05:002024-01-06T11:19:14.718-05:00Still Organizing.
The first week of January is almost over. I am still working on decluttering and organizing my studio. I have got to the part where I usually quit. It is hard to know where to store things so I don't forget about them. I have drawers, bins and shelves but I need to see what needs to be done. Even clear plastic bags or bins don't really help. I am hoping labelling will be the key.

What is your storage solution?

Here is an idea for keeping scissors and rotary cutter safe. My granddaughter left a pencil case behind when she was here and, as she didn't want it, I put it in the pile for thrift store donation. When I was getting things ready to donate, I saw it, and looked inside. It has mesh pockets on either side and is the perfect size for my rotary cutter and packet of blades!

Hubby is still congested and hacking up his lungs. He is, thankfully, getting better. It has been a long haul for him.

Have you seen the new on line store called Temu? I have ordered a couple of small items from them to see whether they are legit and worthwhile. I will let you know how I make out.

View from my Studio. Of course, it should be as we are well into winter. This has, so far, been unusual winter, weather-wise as it has been much warmer than normal (even today it is plus 1c) so we have only had bare ground everywhere. Those that know me well, know that I really enjoy winter with lots of snow and crisp sunny days. They make me feel alive and I could use some of that right now as I battle through the aftermath of a respiratory virus. It feels as though the whole world is coughing as this bug makes it nasty way amongst friends and family.

Did you watch the first professional women's hockey game. I did and I was bursting with pride. Another major step for women. I can remember when I joined marches demanding that women get equal pay for equal work. I was at the forefront of female transit and highway coach drivers and got my share of hassling-not from my male coworkers or their wives but from some older women passengers. It did settle down eventually but I was often asked it I got paid the same as the men. Of course I did but I also remember a time not to far back when not only wouldn't I have had a chance at the job let alone make the same wage.

I think it is important that we keep reminding younger women that everything they have had to be fought for-voting, driving, certain jobs, the right to not be sexually harrassed and so much more.

Welcome 2024 and welcome further progress in rights not only for women but for all those who are still fighting for a right to live, a right to clean water, a right to be treated with respect, a right to have a home, a right to live in peace and many, many more.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-61376390643567863222023-12-29T15:20:00.000-05:002023-12-29T15:20:12.715-05:00A Lovely Christmas
I hope everyone had a good Christmas. I got the virus that has been going around, but, fortunately was well enough to go to the in-laws were we all had a great meal and every better time of fellowship. We don't see the children very often so it is always a surprise to see how much they have grown and matured.

I got the second memory quilt finished and took both of them with us to give to the new owner. She was pleased with both which is always a relief. I am attaching a photo of the quilt. I tried to remove the people as I am posting the photo without their permission but it was to involved to do the photoshop thing. As they are family, I don't think it is a problem.

We took our little Heidi with us and I could see how her age was affecting her. A lot of time she didn't seem to be sure where she was but everyone was patient with her-even the youngest children who usually like to talk her for walks around the house.

I had been hoping to get a lot of quilt related work done this week but that didn't happen. I hope I will be able to get it next week.

Have a Happy New Year and I hope 2024 will be full of blessings,

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-78994003663669750362023-12-20T13:18:00.000-05:002023-12-20T13:18:16.586-05:00Christmas Tidings.
This has been quite a couple of weeks. Last week was mostly Christmas dinners, get togethers and shopping. It was hard to get anything on line done because my internet was acting up. I was, however, getting a lot finished on my last customer memory quilt. I just needed to print the photos on the special printable paper. I got two done without problem and then ran out of ink. No problem. I ordered some from Staples and it was to be delivered on Thurs. This was Tues so I still had a lot of time. Thurs. came and went and so did Friday and the weekend. A query resulted in the information that they were backed up because of Christmas and please wait until Monday. I had some shopping to do on that day so, while there, I bought some store brand ink. Nothing from Staples on Mon. or Tues so I used the new ink. However, when I rinsed the photo under cold water, the ink ran. Contacted Staples again and today which was a week after the original order. Got an email saying the order was cancelled and my money returned.

That was good but I still have a problem. I am now going to try a different method. I have paper that is used for printing pictures on sweat tops. If that doesn't work, I will finish the quilt and do over the photos later. I am not quilting over them so it will be easy enough to remove .

Everything else is done. We had a nice fresh snowfall so a white Christmas is all but assured (temperature is supposed to go up again). I don't have to cook as we are going to hubbies family for the day.

Merry Christmas to you all. Remember that what doesn't get don't this year can be left until the next. The important thing is that you are with those you love. If you don't have family close by, take advantage of the organizations that are serving the big meal. You may meet someone who will become a great friend.

blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-51799493810152408982023-12-07T15:31:00.001-05:002023-12-07T15:31:06.196-05:00Christmas preperations.
How are you coming with your Christmas preparations? I have been sewing all day getting the top of the last memory quilt finished. Yesterday, I baked. I still have 2 more batches of cookies to make and then the tree etc. to do. My cards and gifts will be sent tomorrow.

We had a lovely Christmas dinner with the Quilt Group on Monday. We usually have it at the Legion but they were so busy this year that a member offered to have it at their house. Her hubby is a great cook and another hubby offered to help serve. They have a lovely house and the scenery driving there was wonderful.

I don't think anyone had an evening meal as we all ate so much. I especially enjoyed watching everyone enjoying themselves and exhibit the care each person has for the others. Some ladies made little gifts for everyone and they are fun to get. I gave holders for used machine needles. I received a variety of items-crocheted candy cane, dish scrubby and cloth, candies and a lot more.

We are planning on going to hubby's sisters for the big day. I look forward to seeing how the little ones have grown.

May peace reign in your home midst all the hustle and bustle,

blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-71348308594436491572023-11-30T15:04:00.001-05:002023-11-30T15:04:09.194-05:00Great Friends
I am sorry to hear, Karen, that your arthritis is preventing you from enjoy quilting now. I am glad to hear that you can still knit. Creativity brings peace to our spirits. We got a lot of snow on our side of Algonquin National Park but it isn't too cold today.

I did well at the craft sale selling two quilts and two handbags. I brought home one large quilt (I have a lady interested in it) and a small modern design wall hanging. Hubby has given me a great idea to make that quilt a bit more whimsical so it might be more saleable.

It certainly is the season for craft sales. There are two big ones in the area on Saturday. I am going to one of them as a member of our quilt group has a table in it.

I bought a new light for my quilt room and am looking forward to having greater illumination.

I joined a few friends for lunch today to celebrate a birthday. I really enjoy getting together like this with good friends. We understand each other enough that we can tease, laugh together and share our ups and downs. I hope you all have friends like that.

blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-16740434853641875502023-11-22T12:31:00.000-05:002023-11-22T12:31:28.257-05:00Money Saving Idea
I make a lot of memory quilts that include photos which means I use a lot of the printable fabric sheets. I noticed the last time I used them, that the backing paper was still sticky and I had an idea. I cut a piece of fabric the same size as the backing and then created some labels on my computer. After I hand pressed the fabric to the sticky side of the sheet, I put it into my printer's paper tray (fabric side down) and printed the labels onto the fabric. It worked perfectly.

I serged around the labels before removing the paper but I could have removed it first. I found the paper gave the fabric more body so it was easier to serge. I removed the paper by, gently, making a slit in it with a stitch ripper.

If you try this, let me know how it worked for you.

We have a nice skiff of snow this morning. It should stay for the weekend which may put shoppers into a buying mood for the art clubs sale.

Isn't this an adorable wall hanging. I much prefer St. Nicholas to Santa Claus. I hope it finds a buyer who likes it as much as I do.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-20030665321171365182023-11-21T15:31:00.002-05:002023-11-21T15:31:32.763-05:00Christmas Craft Sales
Have you started thinking about Christmas yet or are you ignoring the advancing calendar? If you are a quilter or crafter, you are probably elbow deep in projects that will be gifts and others that are for craft sales. Our Arts and Crafts Club have a sale this Saturday with Friday set up. I didn't make anything new although I might get a baby quilt finished in time. I have so many quilts that seem to be taking up permanent residency that I have merchandise for a half dozen sales.

Winter seems to have finally settled in. We have had snow on and off but it always melted. It is snowing today and the predicted temperatures are below freezing so I think it is time to get out my snow boots.

Today is one my sister's birthday. We are all, except for baby brother, in our 70's now which still takes me by surprise. My mind still sees the five of us playing games and arguing about nothing important. The older you get, the more you value your family. We are fortunate in that none of us have had a serious illness and have managed to stay out of serious trouble. We have much for which to be thankful.

blessings,

Anna

Wall Hanging for Sale

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-52782848375416768802023-11-10T16:01:00.000-05:002023-11-10T16:01:00.234-05:00Thread
How much thread do you have? I have a large spool holder and another large cone holder. There is also drawer that holds duplicates and a box of decorative threads. Today, I wanted to get the binding done on the one memory quilt and found some fabric that went well with the top. I needed some dark brown thread for the sewing. I have almost every shade of brown that there is but not the one that would be perfect. I decided black would be the best.

While searching for the best binding fabric, I discovered some material I forgot I had. I think I need to do some sorting again. The shelves are starting to get messy again and I think I need to change some things around.

I have a quilt show coming up near the end of this month so am working on a couple of baby quilts. I already have a Christmas wall hanging and a full quilt done so that should be sufficient. I have quit doing little stuff as there are usually other people who do them.

Tomorrow, hubby and I and our neighbour friends are going into the village for the Remembrance Day service. It seems odd to have it on a Saturday but perhaps that will mean more people will be able to attend.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-53915906617066968092023-11-02T16:17:00.003-04:002023-11-02T16:26:04.296-04:00A Winner

Here is a cropped image of the memory quilt I have been making. The second row contains photos of children and I never feel comfortable publishing those for anyone to access. The top is now on the frame so I can get it quilted.

I am very happy as my favourite baseball was on the world series winning team. The team wasn't my favourite which is, of course, the Blue Jays but once they were eliminated, I moved my support to the Texas Rangers. Their lead off hitter was Marcus Simeon who use to play for the Jays. He isn't a fancy player but he just keeps trying to do his best and, last night, he helped his team win.
It is rainy and miserable out today so I am quilting. In addition to loading the top, I have been finishing up another. Unfortunately, I didn't get the blocks matched up properly so my friendly seam ripper and I have a date for this evening while I am watching television.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-36631519022024821712023-11-01T10:24:00.004-04:002023-11-01T10:24:54.115-04:00Winter's Arrival.
I think winter is officially here. It started snowing yesterday and it is still on the ground today. I have most of my winter clothes unpacked and the summer taking their place in the huge suitcase. I still have the cedar chest to do but it is mostly coats. A couple of families from church came and finished getting our wood stacked and our home is now bright and warm from the glow of our wood stove.

Hubby is doing so well with his recuperating knee that I can pretty much get back to my own schedule. I have finished the one memory quilt top and will be getting that on the frame. (photo later). I have another top almost finished that I started before the customer order. It will be going to an ex serviceman. Then I can start the other memory quilt.

I am in the very beginning stages of organizing a quilt retreat for the Burk's Falls Village Quilters. I haven't been to a retreat in quite a number of years and the best way to ensure it will have everything you want is to do it yourself. When I belonged to a Canadian quilting on line group, the leader held a retreat every year. They were so much fun. Eventually, it got to be too far for me to travel so I quit going. I did miss it though.

Christmas sewing is in the back of my mind so I am going to have to start seriously thinking about that as I have a sale the end of this month.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-51828158468656636212023-10-25T13:36:00.003-04:002023-10-25T13:36:34.131-04:00Change in the Weather
Our weather has taken a down turn. We have gone from sunny and mild to rainy and cool. I did manage to get my garden finished, well, almost, and we have church friends coming on Saturday to split and pile out firewood. Hubby is recovering really quick from his knee replacement and the only thing he can't do now is drive. It seems that driving involves a different set of muscles and his leg isn't up to that yet.

I have finally completed the top of one of the memory quilts and just have to add the border. the next one should go quicker as it is a simpler pattern and I won't have extra work to look after.

Another of our dear quilting friends died a few days ago. It wasn't unexpected as she had been ill for a while. Difficult for the family though as her husband passed away less than a year ago. Many of her friends didn't believe she would be a widow very long. She and her husband were especially close and it was hard to imagine one without the other. The service is tomorrow. It will be one of rejoicing as we celebrate our loved ones going 'home' but also of sadness as she was such a wonderful woman.

I managed to get most of my gardening done before the cooler weather arrived. I wanted to transplant some tulip bulbs but I can't locate them. Will have to put markers in when they come up next year.

I am going to have to start on making things for Christmas sales soon. Always something on radar.

blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-26967640537550066262023-10-10T15:45:00.001-04:002023-10-10T15:45:18.860-04:00Getting Caught Up
I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving. Our was one to remember. A number of neighbours gathered at the home of a couple that live across the road from us and we celebrated together. Everyone contributed to the feast and there was more than enough for everyone.

The day felt very special to me and a reminder of the first celebration.

I am almost caught up with my work. I have some more gardening to do but am waiting for it to warm up and quilt raining. Two things have contributed to me getting things done. The Blue Jays have been eliminated from the play offs which means a couple hours of television watching finished. Also, both my writing jobs have suddenly ended. I have been doing the newspaper column for ten plus years and the magazine for nearly 15. To have both publications shut down at almost the same time is odd and, I will admit to feeling disappointed. However, I can now focus more time on my book. I need to get it finished as I have another one ready to go.

I had a nice day of quilting on Monday and am almost finished the top of one of the memory quilts. Hubby is doing well and no longer has to use the walker in the house. He is gradually being able to do more and more which means I have less and less.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-38407149075880860692023-10-04T14:22:00.003-04:002023-10-04T14:22:51.689-04:00Happy Thanksgiving.
Hubby has had his first physio appointment and gets his staples out on Tues. He is getting more mobile everyday although still has a lot of pain. He is now able to get his own breakfast and lunch and let the dog out. It is amazing how much of a help that is.

Our neighbour's and friends have been fantastic. Our neighbour brought us a huge pasta casserole and gluten free cookies. Also had deliveries of muffins and squares also gluten free. T
he same neighbour cut our grass and pulled weeds while I gathered up all the tomatoes.

In short, we have been managing fairly well. I haven't been getting as much quilting done as I would like but it is getting done. I have a bit more time in one area as the newspaper I had been writing for closed down. A little less money and a little more free time. I miss the job though.

This coming weekend is Canadian thanksgiving. In the past, we all gathered at hubby's sister's farm but, since the passing of their mother everyone pretty much does their own thing. This year people on our street are gathering for a pot luck meal at a neighbours (same one I mentioned earlier). It is supposed to rain but I am sure we will still manage. We are looking forward to meeting some of the new people.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadian readers

and blessings to everyone.

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-26183722534569521642023-09-27T14:03:00.002-04:002023-09-27T14:03:23.649-04:00Hubby's Home
It is so beautiful day today, it would put a grin on the face of the Mona Lisa. Hubby got home from the hospital on Friday. He was in longer than normal because his blood oxygen was too low. Once that was straightened out, he was free to go. My neighbour and friend volunteer to go with me because it was a longish drive. This meant I could take my dog and not have to worry about her.

He is improving daily and, this morning, let the dog out and got himself a slice of bread with peanut butter. I slept in so I guess he though he might starve to death. I went to quilting on Monday and it was so good to see everyone again. One of the ladies was celebrating her birthday and brought a gluten free, low calorie cake which was delicious. I am still working on the memory quilt but should have the blocks for the top finished soon. If I kept at it when hubby was away, that one would be done by now. I did get to get a lot of ready done though. I rarely have time for that.

Here is a photo for those of you whose leave do not take on autumn beauty.

Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6829259760983324314.post-8901938517670077742023-09-20T11:21:00.000-04:002023-09-20T11:21:14.885-04:00Waiting
Here I am spending my day waiting for a phone call that hubby is coming home. He had knee replacement surgery on Monday and it went well. He is now learning to walk and go upstairs and then he can come back to the nest. I am now the sole caregiver of the chickens, dog and cat.

I have been getting some things done that otherwise might have been put in the 'procrastinate' drawer but I can't get outside to do the garden in case the phone rings. However, we are only the late middle of September so there is lots of time for that-unless of course, it snows!

Last night was interesting. I was a little later than usual going to bed as I watched the Blue Jays win their game and it took me a bit to settle down. I was woken around 2.00 by the cat loudly declaring that she had caught a mouse and I needed to dispose of it. Ally has a special meow when she catches a mouse so we always know what it is. At 6.00 Heidi woke me up as she wanted out and when I had gone back to sleep, the phone rang at 7.45 with someone wanting to know how hubby was doing? Don't people sleep in anymore or assume that a retired person might be?

In between the usual chores, I have been working on my memory quilt. I think I will also finish a friends knitted tea cosy. The evenings have been cool enough to light the wood stove. Our maple trees are looking nicer every day. The drive to the hospital where hubby is is very scenic with a lot of lakes. Ontario is a beautiful Province.

Blessings,
Backwoods Quilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427089985388391759noreply@blogger.com0
